There are lots of issues surrounding the covers a cleaning business should take out - and we will try to give a brief overview here for you.

If you are a sole trader working on your own without any outside influence or help then you need cleaners public liability insurance.  This is not a legal requirement but will protect you and your business from claims made against you for legal liability for damage and/or injury.

If you are a business (sole trader or limited) and you employ members of staff in any capacity, whether thay be directly as your own employees, or as sub-contractors, then you need cleaners employers liability insurance in conjunction with the public liability cover. This is a legal requirement and you are obliged to carry the cover.

There are certain exceptions to the rule, such as Limited companies with a sole director, or the employees being close family members but as a rule of thumb, if you have staff then you need to insure them. This applies even if those staff work 1 hour a week for you.
