What is Public Liability Insurance?

If you injure someone or damage someone's property through your negligence, they can legally sue you for damages, that's where public liability insurance comes in.
If you work as a contract cleaner you should have public liability insurance, not because it is legally required but because you run the risk of losing everything if you cause injury to a member of the public and don't have any cover.
In this ever increasing litigous world we live in it is very easy for a member of the public to make a claim for compensation following a trip or slip. Where does that compensation come from? Usually from insurance companies who have provided some form of liability insurance to the business involved. This would probably be a claim under the businesses' public liability insurance. But what would happen if the business didn't have any public liability insurance cover? They would have to settle the compensation claim from their own money. The claim could run into thousands of pounds. Can you afford to pay that yourself?
In addition to claims for injury you could face a claim for damaging someone's property. Would you want to pay for a new TV if you inadvertantly scratched a customer's TV with your machine?

Are all Contract Cleaners Insurance policies the same?

In short, no. Most policies won't pay out if you damage the item being cleaned such as an office table or carpet. In addition most insurers exclude treatment risks so if you try to remove a stain from a carpet that causes further discolouration, or you shrink a carpet you won't be covered.
If you are paying less than £100 for your public liability insurance (for £1,000,000 cover that is) you won't be covered for such occurences. How do we know? Because the directors of GLEAMING INSURANCE have being arranging contract cleaning insurance for many years and we know which insurers provide such covers and which one's don't. Who needs Public Liability Insurance?

There is no legal requirement to take out public liability insurance. However it is available to any contract cleaners who work alone (without employees or subcontractors) including sole traders, partnerships and Ltd companies with just the one director. If you do employ staff or use subcontractors then you will legally need to arrange Employers Liability Insurance which can be done by requesting a contract cleaners combined liability insurance quote.

How much Public Liability cover do I need?

That depends on the type of work you do and the customer's you have. Most contract cleaners start with the basic level of £1,000,000. If you work are asked to increase this limit for any of your commercial clients you can increase it at any point. Local authorities tend to require a £5,000,000 limit of indemnity and some even want you to have £10,000,000 which we can arrange if you call us on 0845 474 0068.
It is relatively easy to calculate the cost of damaging property, if a house is worth £250,000 then a limit of £1,000,000 will cover it. It seems very unlikely that a contract cleaner could completely damage a property. Therefore perhaps the biggest risk you face is injuring a member of the public and quantifying such a claim is very difficult to do. You can increase the limit at any time so it may be worthwhile starting with £1,000,000 and increasing it as and when you need to rather than paying too much for cover you don't need.

How much does Public Liability Insurance cost?

That depends on your needs and whether you want cover for damage to the property you are cleaning and treatment risks. A standard policy (which excludes these covers) will cost around £70 per year for a £1,000,000 limit. A comprehensive policy (which will provide these covers) will cost about £175 per year.
